Brass vs Stainless Steel Shower Hardware: Which to Specify?
One of the first decisions on a shower hardware spec is the material. Hinges, clamps and pull handles come in either solid brass or stainless steel -and the choice affects cost, finish quality and lifespan.
Solid brass (CZ121 / H59 / H62)
- Machines cleanly and holds fine threads -better for heavy hinges.
- Takes plating and polishing beautifully; chrome over brass looks deeper than chrome over zinc.
- Heavier -customers feel the quality in hand.
- Higher cost, but standard for premium shower brands.
Stainless steel (SUS304 / SUS316)
- Naturally corrosion-resistant without plating.
- Lighter and lower cost.
- 316 is the choice for coastal / seaside installations.
- Best suited to sliding door kits and railing systems where larger sections are used.
When to choose which
Specify brass for wall hinges and premium pull handles where feel and finish matter. Specify 304 stainless for sliding rollers, glass clamps and balustrade railing where volume and corrosion resistance matter. Many brands run both: brass hinges, stainless sliding kits.
