Shower Door Glass Thickness: What Your Hardware Needs to Handle
Hardware and glass are a matched system. A hinge rated for 8 mm glass fitted to a 12 mm door will sag within a year. Here is the quick reference.
Common glass thicknesses
- 8 mm -economy enclosures, lightweight doors.
- 10 mm -most common for frameless showers in Europe and North America.
- 12 mm -premium / heavy-duty doors, requires stronger hinges and wider clamps.
What to check on every fitting
- Hinges -confirm max door weight. Two hinges usually cover up to ~40 kg; heavier doors may need three.
- Glass clamps -must match glass thickness exactly; the wrong liner will crack glass.
- Sliding kits -roller load rating must exceed total door weight, not per-panel weight.
